Keeping Dogs Warm In Winter

June has arrived, bringing colder weather with it. We pull on our beanies and wrap our hands around a hot cuppa, but what of our four-legged friends? Keeping dogs warm in winter requires more than just fuzzy socks!

Here are some handy tips to keep your fur friend comfortable and healthy till warmer days return.

How cold is too cold?

At 10°C, monitor dogs, especially puppies, seniors, short-haired breeds, or pups with health concerns. For long periods of time, the cold can be potentially dangerous at 7°C, and life-threatening at 4°C.

take a brisk stroll

Dogs can and should continue to go for walks in winter. Just like you, your pup will need 5 minutes to warm up before more strenuous exercise. Shorter, more frequent walks may benefit those who are sensitive to the cold. Make sure to thoroughly dry wet paws and coats after a wet weather walk.

Winter wear

More than an adorable fashion statement, dog coats help your pup brave the elements. Smaller or short-coated breeds are especially sensitive to the cold. The perfect coat should be snug (loose is better than too tight) and have no buttons or strings to chew on.

If your area sees snow or frost, rubber-soled dog booties or socks might save the day. Short practice runs at home, with lots of praise and encouragement will help them gain confidence (even if it is sometimes tempting to laugh at their first ginger attempts).

skincare

Regular brushing will help reduce shedding and mats, especially if the fur has gotten wet. If you bathe your dog, it is best to do so indoors with warm water, and to thoroughly dry your dog afterwards.

Winter can dry out your pet’s skin; ask your veterinarian if omega-3 fatty acids would help.

creature comforts

It is ideal to keep your pup inside on cold nights, in a warm, dry place, away from drafts. If your outdoor dog does not want to change their habits, insulate their kennel, add a curtain over the door to keep out drafts and add lots of extra bedding. Wherever your pup sleeps, keep antifreeze out of reach, as is lethal to pets.

A good, thick bed with extra blankets will help keep them cosy. Place a safety screen in front of heaters and fireplaces to protect your pets from bumping into them.

Extra rugs can be helpful in keeping dogs warm in winter, giving you both a warm place to hang out. Play more indoor enrichment games to keep your pup exercised inside. See our blog post ‘Indoor Games for Rainy Days’ for ideas!
