How To Keep Pets Entertained Indoors In Hot Weather
With the weather starting to get a little toasty, it’s really important that we keep our pets cool! This is especially vital for overnight, senior and/or brachycephalic dogs (squished nose dogs) that can quickly overheat.
Rather than being stuck on the couch all day, we’ve provided a list of fun, interactive games and activities that you can enjoy doing with your dog indoors while it’s hot outside. It’ll help you pass the time and keep your dog’s brain stimulated!
1. Trick Training
Work on practicing basic training commands, like ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘lie down’ and ‘shake’. Once you’ve got those nailed, try some more advanced tricks like ‘play dead’, barking on command or teaching your dog to fetch your shoes or newspaper.
2. Interactive Dog Feeders
Whether you're stuck at home or going to work, leaving your dog a Kong, treat dispenser or food puzzle is a good idea to keep them entertained. For Kong recipe ideas, head on over to our other blog post, 'What To Put in a Kong'.
3. Make Dog Biscuits
Even if you’re a hopeless in the kitchen, dog biscuits are incredibly easy to make! You can find a super easy recipe at Battersea Dogs that only needs 4 ingredients; peanut butter, flour, banana and water. Your dog will love you for it!
4. Good ol’ Tug of War
If you don’t have a tug toy, an old t-shirt or towel will do the trick! Tug of war is a great physical activity for your pup that can also help with teaching some good manners and impulse control. And contrary to popular belief, it won’t teach your dog to be overly dominant or aggressive. It’s actually an opportunity to engage in teamwork and work with your dog to pull apart the toy, rather than it being a competitive activity Rooney, Bradshaw, and Robinson (2000).
6. Chasing Bubbles
For a fun, lighthearted activity, why not try chasing bubbles with your dog? Head to Kmart (or any store) and grab some kids’ bubbles—just make sure they’re non-toxic and safe for pets, usually found in the kid’s section. Blowing bubbles is a fantastic way to engage your dog’s curiosity while helping them improve their balance and coordination as they leap and chase them. It's an easy way to keep them entertained and moving, perfect for an afternoon of play!
7. Indoor Obstacle Course
Turn your living room into a mini agility course! Use household items like chairs, pillows, and blankets to create tunnels, jumps, and zigzag paths. This is a fantastic way to burn off your dog’s energy while also sharpening their agility skills. Whether they’re navigating a pillow maze or hopping over broomsticks, they’ll be fully engaged and challenged in a way that’s fun for both of you.
8. Hide and Seek
For a mentally stimulating game, try playing hide and seek with your dog. Hide somewhere in the house and call your dog to come find you—it’s a great way to practice recall while keeping things fun! Alternatively, you can hide their favorite toy or treats around the house and let them search for it. This game taps into their natural hunting instincts, providing both physical and mental stimulation.
9. Doggie Massage or Grooming
Give your dog a relaxing massage or grooming session. Gently massaging their muscles can help alleviate tension, improve circulation, and make them feel more at ease. Regular grooming, especially brushing, not only keeps their coat healthy but also strengthens the bond between you and your dog. It’s a calming activity that can help them relax and unwind, and it gives you a chance to check for any lumps, bumps, or skin issues.
10. Frozen Treats
Treat your dog to a cool, refreshing snack with dog-friendly frozen treats. You can freeze some of their favorite fruits like blueberries, watermelon, or banana chunks for a tasty and healthy summer snack. Another idea is to freeze a mixture of their kibble, yogurt, or broth in an ice tray to create a special ice treat. These not only help them cool down but also provide mental stimulation as they work on the frozen treat.
11. DIY Snuffle Mat
Stimulate your dog’s natural hunting instincts by creating a DIY snuffle mat. This can be easily made by tying strips of fabric onto a rubber mat, a towel, or even a piece of cardboard. Hide your dog’s favorite treats or kibble within the layers of fabric and watch as they use their nose to sniff them out. Snuffle mats are excellent for mental enrichment, promoting slow eating, and keeping your dog engaged in a fun and rewarding activity. Plus, it’s a great rainy-day project that your dog will love!
12. Playdate
If your dog is a social butterfly, setting up a playdate with a friend’s dog can be a great way to let them burn off some energy. Make sure the play area is safe, enclosed, and comfortable for both dogs to have fun. Playdates provide a wonderful opportunity for dogs to practice social skills and get the physical exercise they need.
13. Keeping Cool
On hot days, it’s essential to maintain a cool environment for your dog. Keep fans or air conditioning on, and ensure there’s always fresh water available. Providing cool spaces, like a shaded area or cooling mats, can help your dog stay comfortable in warm weather.
14. Relaxing Together
Sometimes the best way to enjoy time with your dog is to simply unwind together. Whether you’re watching your favorite show, reading a book, or just enjoying a quiet moment, cuddling up with your dog can provide comfort for both of you. It’s a perfect way to bond and give your pup some affection without too much activity.
By focusing on a mix of social interaction, relaxation, and care, you can keep your dog content indoors, even when outdoor play isn’t ideal.
