Pet Valentine's Day: Adorable ways to show your pet some love

We all know February 14th is Valentine's Day, but did you know February 20th is National Love Your Pet Day?

It is the perfect opportunity to show some extra special TLC to our furry family members who bring so much joy and happiness into our lives.

Here are five ideas to share some Valentine’s Day love with the special creature in your life.

DIY photo session

Create a fun photo session with your pet and capture your special bond!

The main things to remember are:

  • Get good lighting - natural light is best, especially at sunrise or sunset.

  • Try to avoid bright flashes - they don't always look the best and they can give your pet a fright.

  • A few treats wont go astray either! Get down to your pet at eye level, using a stay command or a squeaky toy to get their attention as necessary.

  • A few Valentine's themed props are a cute way to commemorate the day too!

The most important thing to remember is have fun!

Spend some quality time together

Nothing says I love you as much as snuggles, pats and playtime. Play some fun games with your pet, like fetch or tug-of-war! There aren't many dogs who wouldn't love a trip to the park or some playtime in the backyard.

Spending quality time grooming your pet, or giving some pats and snuggles is a lovely way to deepen connection and is often appreciated by older pets who aren't as playful as they used to be.

A pet themed cuddle fest in the form of a sweet movie like 'Dog',  'Marley and Me', 'Red Dog' or 'Puss in Boots' is a great way to end the day.

Give your pet a special treat

Everybody loves gifts, including your pet. Pet Valentine's Day is a great excuse to treat your animal to something special.

Let's face it, some of us spoil our pets absolutely rotten, and if you and Fluffy enjoy the champagne lifestyle, then you'll love some of the gorgeous accessories available from local pet boutique Coco and Pud. They have everything from Bow-Ties to a Pink Ombre "Chewy Vuitton" Bag Dog Toy.

A new treat doesn't need to be expensive! Pop some kibble into a clean and empty plastic milk bottle (be sure to throw away the lid as it is a choking hazard!) and watch your furry friend go nuts as they paw it across the floor. A fist-sized ball made out of tin foil is also a fun toy for cats - not too small though as some cats will try to eat anything! Organise A pet play-date

Your cat or fish may not be so excited about a pet play-date but your dog will love it! Scheduling a puppy play-date is lots of fun for your dog. They get to spend time with other friends they enjoy as well as bonding with you. Along with spending time with your pet, you get to catch up with a human friend. It's a win for everyone!

Donate to a pet shelter

Your pet is a lucky animal who is no-doubt showered in love day in and day out. A beautiful expression of love and care on Pets Valentine's day is to show kindness to pets in need by making a donation to a local pet shelter. It could be a financial gift, or even a donation of old towels, blankets or food that can help make life a little more comfortable for pets without owners. The Animal Welfare League of Queensland always gratefully accepts donations of all kinds.

Creating a new tradition around February 20th and Pet Valentine's day is a fun way to create lovely memories honouring the unique bond that you share with your pets;  so whether you decide to go big or keep things simple and low-key, the whole point is about embracing the love and expressing how much your furry friends mean to you. Happy Pet Valentine's Day!
