A Kennel or In-Home Pet Minder?

Tossing Up Between a Pet Minder or Kennel?

Truth is, there isn’t any yes or no answer. Deciding to go with a kennel or in-home pet minder is often a decision that is specific to the pet and you as a pet owner. Where a kennel may suit the needs and personality of one dog, it may not suit another. Though we are an in-home pet minding service and not a kennel, we feel like it’s important to give you an overview of the benefits of a pet minder and a kennel, so you can make an informed decision that is best for you and your pet.

benefits of a kennel

So, let’s start with the benefits of sending your pet to a kennel:

✅ Socialisation - if your pet is a social butterfly and thrives off the company of others, a boarding facility is perfect for playtime and making friends with other animals.

✅ Security - at many facilities, kennel staff are often on-hand day and night. If there’s any incidents that may arise, you can rest assured knowing that someone will be on the premises and likely able to reach your pet.

✅ Affordable - as kennels can cater for multiple pets at any given time, this can allow them to keep boarding fees low. This is especially great for pet parents that plan on being away for a longer period of time.

✅ Facilities - who says you're the only one who gets a holiday? Some kennels are now decked out with pools, agility areas, interactive toys and premium meals that would make any pet drool!

Now for the in-home pet minding option:

✅ Environment - if you have a reactive, elderly, special needs or anxious dog, having him/her stay in their own safe environment will help to reduce stress and anxiety when you’re away. Many dogs do best when they keep to a regular routine, so having an in-home pet minder will allow your pet to sleep snug in their own bed, eat from their own food bowl and stay in their familiar surroundings.

✅ Cheaper - if you have multiple pets, choosing an in-home pet sitter can be a more affordable option. At Happy Hounds, you aren’t hit with additional fees for multiple pets when you book our overnight stay option.

✅ Individualised - when you choose an in-home pet minder, their attention is given to your pet and your pet only! More time can be spent attending to the needs of your furry companion and following any care instructions that are tailored to your pet. Additional time  can also be spent training, grooming and walking your pet, that may not otherwise be possible elsewhere.

✅ Home Services - though your pets are most important, your home is often a close second ! When you choose a pet minder, looking after your home comes with the territory. Caring for your garden, bringing in the mail and bins and ensuring your home looks lived in, is just an extra benefit of choosing an in-home minder.

While there are many benefits to kennels and boarding facilities, please keep in mind that there are drawbacks to both. These can include costs, transmissible illnesses such as Kennel Cough, injuries when interacting with other pets, and stress and anxiety. As we previously mentioned, choosing to send your pet to a kennel or booking an in-home pet minder is a personal option that is specific to your pet and you as a pet and home owner. It’s important to consider your pet’s health, age, temperament and whether or not you’re comfortable having someone visit or stay in your home.
